VEGANISM AND INTERSECTIONALITIES: HUMAN HEALTH, ANIMALS, ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIETY

Abstract

This work intends to present veganism from a theoretical and methodological perspective of intersectionality. The arguments for why to adopt veganism, according to The Vegan Society, are: health, animal cause, environment and society. The present writing presents each one of them thinking about the possible intersections. First, we consider the fact that the consumption of products derived from animals is very bad for human health, especially for the poor and peripheral population, a process called nutricide. In the case of animals, the suffering is immense, especially for females, exploited as animals, females and mothers. Since agribusiness is only for profit, the speciesist relationship that humans establish with other animals will only change if the centrality of profit is changed. In the case of the environment, the people most affected by this model are black people. In the case of society, it is important to rethink the relationship with animals due to the diseases and pandemics generated by this bond. A theme dear to veganism must also be hunger. Agribusiness, thinking only of profit, gourmetizes certain products (including vegans) while many people go hungry. All themes demonstrate that veganism is a political and anti-oppression movement.
