This article aims to share knowledge from neurobiology, neuroscience, and psychiatry on emotional processing across various animal species, offering an in-depth perspective on sentience beyond intellectual capacity. Although sentience is often associated with intelligence, it is crucial to consider other mechanisms that indicate whether an animal can experience pain and suffering. This information is particularly valuable for Animal Law professionals, who rely on scientific data to defend the intrinsic dignity of animals, recognizing them as individuals, regardless of their ecological role or utility. This review underscores the importance of a scientific approach to ensure that animal rights and welfare are acknowledged and respected.
